One Lecture. Three Lab. Trees and Forests of North America. Students will learn to identify economically, ecologically, and culturally important trees common in North America. Students will become familiar with plant classification and taxonomy, scientific and common names, ranges, anatomical and physiological characteristics, and cultural uses of these species. Students will be able to: describe the differences and similarities between taxonomy and phylogeny; use proper naming conventions when communicating plant names; use field guides, dichotomous keys, and other resources for plant identification; identify 41 tree genera; describe the ecological and physiological factors that determine nine forest types; describe the current and traditional uses of trees and forest types.
