Introduction to Ethnic Studies

Three lecture. This course offers an explanation of the social, political, historical and cultural experiences of African Americans, Asian Americans, Chican@s /Latin@s, and Indigenous peoples (Native Americans) in the United States. This introductory course provides an overview of American communities of color and their struggle for social-economic justice and democracy. Students will be able to: explain the social, economic, and political issues and events pertaining to the development of Ethnic Studies; examine concepts and theories in the field of Ethnic Studies; (e.g., racial formation, assimilation, etc.); compare and contrast the diverse histories and experiences of various communities of color (African Americans, Asian Americans / Pacific Islanders, Chican@s /Latin@s, and Indigenous peoples) and other ethnic groups in the United States; describe prominent individuals, institutions and social movements (networks); analyze the power relationships in the U.S. using an interdisciplinary approach; evaluate historical and contemporary laws and institutional practices that impact communities of color; compare and contrast the social, economic, and political structures and policies affecting communities of color; formulate solutions to help rectify issues and problems that exist in society.
