Catalog description

Three lecture. Focus on novels and authors in the dystopian genre of fiction. Emphasis on common themes and techniques in the genre and connections to historical and current events. Students will be able to: identify literary elements and conventions common to novels in dystopian genre; explain relationships between the dystopian worlds in these texts and historical or current events; apply lateral reading skills to research events that connect to the literature; analyze literary techniques, themes, and shifting trends in the genre; compare and contrast assigned novels with their adapted films or movies in the same genre; evaluate the thematic, political, and historical accuracy of the predictions made in dystopian literature; create a research paper that explores how dystopian themes in literature are reflected in the progression of world events. Pre/Corequisite(s): ENG 102. General Education: Arts and Humanities
