Introduction to Early Childhood Education

Catalog description

Three lecture. An introduction to the profession of Early Childhood Education, including a historical overview, developmentally appropriate practices, cultural diversity, family roles, teacher roles, professional development, and current issues. Students will perform 30 hours of classroom experiential involvement in local organizations that care for children 0-8 years of age. Students will be able to: demonstrate knowledge of the history of early childhood education (1a, 1b, 5a, 13.5, 13.9 ); explain and evaluate philosophies in early childhood education (1a-c, 4a, 5a, 13.9); describe contemporary theories of early childhood education (1a, 1b, 6c, 13.9); recognize the roles of families and teachers and their impact on early childhood education; describe the various roles the teachers of young children must fulfill (4a-d, 5a, 13.6); identify key concepts for continued professional development (6a-e, 13.4, 13.12); identify current issues affecting early childhood education (6c-e, 13.4, 13.12); and and observe an early childhood program or programs for at least 30 hours (7a, 7b, 13.1-3, 13.10) (NAEYC and ADE standards).
