2 Lecture. 3 Lab. This introductory course provides an overview of HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicles) and BEV (Battery Electric Vehiles) Systems. Emphasis will be place on safety procedures, design, and operations of HEV and BEV systems. Students will be able to: 1. explain the history of hybrid electric vehicles and battery electric vehicles (HEV/BEV); 2. apply HEV and BEV standard safety procedures, service and repair; 3. describe the theories and operations of series, parallel, series-parallel, battery electric vehicle, and plug-in hybrids; 4. explain the theory and operation of HEV and BEV electrified powertrains, including system and component types; 5. differentiate between drivability issues caused by the internal combustion engine and hybrid drive systems; 6. diagnose malfunctions of transmission and driveline systems; 7. identify failures or problems in electric and electronic steering systems; 8. analyze brake system performance problems, including hydraulic system and regenerative system malfunctions.
