Catalog description

One lecture. Five lab. An introductory course in the techniques and materials traditionally used in oil and/or acrylic painting. Students will be able to: define terms used in painting; identify different tools and materials and be able to use them for their varying effects in a painting; identify and use basic color theory; identify the qualities of color regarding physical, emotional and psychological factors; demonstrate the creation of the illusion of 3-dimensional form and space on a 2-dimensional plane; demonstrate the awareness and sense of aesthetics necessary to compose and record ideas and subject matter; stretch and prepare a canvas ground; and utilize different approaches and techniques in creating a painted image. Grading Option: May be taken for S/U credit.
