Three lecture. Ethnohistorical survey of the American Southwest culture area, focusing on selected Pueblo and non-Pueblo peoples. This course is designed to expose the student to the richness of traditional Southwestern cultures in order to stimulate an appreciation for the Native history and ethnic diversity of the region. Students will be able to: distinguish, unique characteristics of human history within the Southwestern Culture Area; briefly define the discipline of anthropology, what anthropologists mean by culture , , and how anthropologists work in Southwestern communities; explain the fundamental differences between various Southwestern peoples and their ancestry. SBS; specify how Southwestern native groups have resisted or adapted to several centuries of cultural hegemony; analyze and compare how numerous Southwestern societies, indigenous and historical, function within their respective cultures through time; increase awareness and understanding of ethnic and cultural diversity.
