Electrical Systems I

Catalog description

Two lecture. Three lab. Introductory course in Alternating Current (AC) and Direct Current (DC) electric theory. Includes electric circuits using resistors, capacitors and inductors. Also includes solenoids, relays, transformers, basic DC and AC motors, circuit protection devices and a variety of switches. Students will be able to: 1. interpret electrical motor control and programmable controller system schematics, including identifying schematic symbols, signal flow, and operation of the components and system; 2. adjust and test limit switches, pressure switches, float switches, and electronic proximity sensors; 3. use a multimeter to measure voltage, current, and resistance in an electrical circuit to verify system operation and power levels; 4. select, install, and test fuses and circuit breakers; 5. install and test electrical relay control components in a control system; 6. install and test electro-fluid power components and circuits; 7. troubleshoot a solenoid-operated fluid power relay control circuit; 8. test and replace transformers; 9. effectively use computer applications, information systems, and programming; 10. employ mechanical fabrication procedures; 11. demonstrate ethical behavior and industry professional standards; 12. practice effective oral and written communication; 13. achieve common goals through effective collaboration.
