Foundations of Indigenous Environmental Justice

Three lecture. 0 This course examines perspectives on environmental justice, the history of the environmental justice movement, policy, law and regulations, contemporary issues, and current struggles of Indigenous peoples for environmental justice in the United States and worldwide. Students will be able to: 1. explain the distinctions between environmentalism, environmental justice, and Indigenous environmental justice issues; 2. differentiate diverse perspectives within the environmental justice movement; 3. analyze various policies, laws, and regulations and their application pertaining to the environment, and Indigenous communities; 4. evaluate the effects /consequences of environmental degradation and exploitation; 5. examine contemporary Indigenous environmental justice issues; 6. compare and contrast local knowledge, traditional ecological knowledge, and western science; 7. design strategies to rectify social and economic injustices deriving from the degradation of the environment.
