Three lecture. 0 This course surveys the basic concepts and ideologies surrounding modern United States Federal Indian policy, with an emphasis on stereotypes, historical controversies, and cultural differences. This course will provide the necessary foundation for advanced courses in Indigenous Studies, Political Science and Ethnic Studies. Students will be able to: explain the basic concepts and ideologies used in formulating modern federal Indian policy; identify the European intellectual trends that were influential in creating ideologies and policies that were (and in some cases still are) applied to Indigenous peoples; explore the various phases of history of Indigenous-colonial/settler relationships, from the 1400s to the present; differentiate various definitions and practices, through time and currently, of Indigenous sovereignty and self-determination; critically analyze the distinct legal histories, legal and social constructions, and limitations of state, federal, and tribal jurisdictions; evaluate the results of conflicting jurisdictional claims, as well as successful and unsuccessful efforts to resolve these conflicts.
