Introduction to Applied Indigenous Studies

Three lecture. This course is intended for any student seeking a basic introduction to Indigenous societies, histories, and cultures, as well as those considering further work in Applied Indigenous Studies.The course will include units on stereotypes and public perceptions of Indigenous people; more accurate Indigenous histories; approaches to Indigenous values and cultural expression; and contemporary Indigenous nation building. Students will also explore the global dimension of Indigenous studies, linking Indigenous societies around the world. Students will be able to: describe the rich diversity of Indigenous societies in Arizona, the United States, and the world; eplain the origins and development of the field of American Indian/Indigenous Studies; explain the key, unique legal and political status of Indigenous people in the United States; demonstrate an understanding of the historic interactions between Indigenous and colonizing nations in North America; communicate an informed understanding about some of the most important efforts of Indigenous people today to build a promising, sustainable future.
