( SPAN 315 or permission of instructor This course is an introduction to the phonology (the system of sounds) and the phonetics (the pronunciation of those sounds) of the Spanish language. The course is designed with three primary goals in mind. First, the study of phonetics/phonology enables students to improve their pronunciation (assuming they are not native Spanish-speakers.) Second, the introduction to the systematic, scientific study of language linguistics, where students learn to transcribe written and oral language, focusing on areas of difficulty for English-speaking students of Spanish. And last, the examination of ways in which Spanish pronunciation differs systematically throughout the world. Semester(s) Offered: Spring
