Catalog description

This course introduces students to the social and religious history of Jews and Judaism. Students learn about the emergence of the foundational beliefs and practices of Judaism, how Jews have adapted these traditions differently through the ages, and the resulting variegated expressions of Judaism present today. Students analyze primary sources—including the Hebrew Bible, rabbinic texts, and philosophical writings—in light of the social and historical contexts in which they were produced.
