Greek Tragedy and Philosophy

This course explores the relationship between ancient Greek tragedy and philosophy. Ancient philosophers, especially Aristotle, took for granted the connection between tragedy and philosophy, a view later defended by modern thinkers such as Hegel and Nietzsche. Students read several tragic plays by Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides while examining questions of fate, justice, human suffering, and morality. The course also includes a critical analysis of philosophical theories about tragedy from both the ancient and modern eras. Semester(s) Offered: Offered as needed
