Catalog description
This course follows the development of a modern consciousness within the art of Europe and the United States from 1840 to 1940. The progressive advance of stylistic movements during a time of industrial change and colonial expansion includes realism, impressionism, post-impressionism, expressionism, cubism, dada, surrealism, and others. The impact of non-European traditions on the growth of a modern aesthetic is explored. Semester(s) Offered: Fall
