Building Cleveland: Architecture, Planning, and Society

Catalog description

This course introduces students to Cleveland’s rich architectural history and complex built environment. Cleveland was once one of the nation’s largest cities and an industrial powerhouse. The city’s built environment provides us with tangible evidence of Cleveland’s settlement, growth, and ultimate decline. This course introduces students to major movements in U.S. architecture and urban form, grounded in learning about how these movements played out in Cleveland. Students will develop an understanding of the city as a human creation, the city’s built environment as an expression of the human condition, and the city as a cultural artifact that provides a lens into the lived experience and history of the city.
