Human Sexuality in Social Work Practice

Catalog description

This course is a survey of issues and attitudes associated with human sexuality. It is primarily intended for social workers who intend to work with any client base in the future. Using a biopsychosocial perspective, emphasis will be placed on the social, cultural, familial and individual differences in sexual and reproductive attitudes, values, and behavior. Students will be introduced to common sex-related issues and to the particular concerns of various sexually oppressed groups. This course integrates the micro, mezzo, and macro approaches to sex and sexuality. This involves an exploration of political, historical, and biological aspects of sexuality. Students reflect upon their understanding of sexuality, and are asked to integrate this knowledge into their work across the many populations, organizations, and communities of their practice.
