Child Welfare II

Catalog description

Prerequisites: Admitted to the Social Work program. This is the second in a series of two child welfare courses. The first course (SWK 353: Child Welfare I) focuses on protecting children through strengthening and supporting their families. This course (Undergraduate SWK 453: Child Welfare II; Graduate SWK 553: Child Welfare II) addresses the developmental and permanence needs of children in the child welfare system. The developmental perspective provides the conceptual underpinning for the course. The course content covers seven areas of focus: 1) The trauma of separation; 2) Placement issues; 3) Foster care; 4) Adoption, and; 5) Family Assessment; 6) Risk assessment; 7) Case planning and family-centered casework. Students can expect to master the following competencies and practice behaviors: Application of social work ethics to guide professional practice; Application of critical thinking to inform and communicate professional judgment; Application of human behavior and social environment knowledge specific to children and families to professional practice; and Engagement, assessment, intervention, and evaluation with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. This course has the Ohio Child Welfare Training Program Caseworker CORE 2.0 Training embedded into the course content.
