Genocide: An Interdisciplinary Perspective

Prerequisites: Completion of the Core Curriculum Research & Professional Writing requirement for WAC and at least sophomore standing. Understanding the sources of genocide requires an interdisciplinary response making use of the social sciences. While mass extermination can be traced back to early historical eras, the previous “crime with no name” only emerged after the end of World War Two. Hence “genocide” became defined as a modern legal and political term by the international community. Two primary case studies, the Holocaust and Cambodia (1970-1998) along with reference to others are examined to analyze the root conditions and causes of these acts. Pathways and processes to prevent future genocides are critically assessed as to the strength and weaknesses behind international, national and local courses of action.
