Catalog description

Prerequisite: Completion of the Core Curriculum Research & Professional Writing requirement and must have at least sophomore standing to be eligible for this course. The international system is one where vast numbers of people remain challenged by inadequate life chances. These populations find themselves in areas where political and social systems are either inadequate or unwilling to provide fundamental security and human dignity. This course is designed to explore just such areas and issues. It will explore issues related to political and economic development. This will include an exploration of colonialism, nationalism, and state building. It will provide explanations for the emergence of a growing middle class within some regions and explore why others continue to lag in this degree of development.
