End of Life and Palliative Care

Catalog description

Prerequisites: Completion of the Core Curriculum Research & Professional Writing requirement. Students must be admitted to the Nursing Program. This course focuses on end of life and palliative care within the wider social context of community health care systems. Care across the life span with specific emphasis on end of life and palliative care is explored. Historical development of major forces that have shaped current and emerging directions are addressed. Integration of nursing, home heath, hospice, palliative care and community health concepts along with trends provide an information base for students to assess /care for patients within these specialty areas. There is emphasis on development of therapeutic nursing interventions that encompass primary, secondary and tertiary preventative strategies to promote optimal levels of functioning for individuals, families, groups and communities. Exploration of economic, environmental, cultural and technological stressors regarding end of life and palliative care are addressed. Interprofessional team approaches within these specialties areas will be explored.
