Quality, Safety, and QI in Health Care Systems

Prerequisite: Admission to the nursing program or permission of instructor, completion of the Core Curriculum Research & Professional Writing requirement, and NUR 249. This course introduces students to the principles and practices of quality improvement (QI), patient safety, and systems thinking in healthcare. Students will explore nurse-sensitive indicators, cost containment strategies, and the use of data to drive improvements in care delivery. Emphasis is placed on medication safety, interprofessional collaboration, and the application of the AHRQ Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle. Students will analyze real-world cases and propose evidence-based solutions to enhance outcomes in complex health systems.
