Social Issues in Health Care

Catalog description
This course will examine population-based social determinants of health that influence health and illness in the United States with an emphasis on US minority populations and socioeconomic factors. Using an interdisciplinary and intersectional approach, we will examine the complex ways in which race, ethnicity, class/socioeconomic status, gender, disability, sexual orientation and health behaviors impact health and illness. In this course, we will also discuss the historical, political, economic, social, and environmental influences on health, illness, and health care delivery to understand social determinants of health within different sociocultural and sociopolitical contexts.
