The Modern African State: History, Nature, Prospects, and Challenges

Prereq: Completion of the Core Curriculum Research & Professional Writing requirement. This is a seminar course based on case studies of a few selected states in modern Africa. The case studies range from Kenya to Ghana, South Africa to Senegal, the Democratic Republic of Congo to Egypt, and many more. The course highlights the origin, nature, prospects and challenges in and among modern African states. The course exposes students to the major events, issues, and themes that link the history of these states together, but also distinguish them from one another. The major events, moments, individuals, themes, and issues in the history of these countries are unearthed, debated, and examined. Each semester, the course focuses on a specific African state exemplifying the history, nature, prospects and challenges of the modern African state.
