Comparative Emancipation: The End of Slavery in the Western Hemisphere

Pre-req: Completion of the Core Curriculum Research & Professional Writing requirement. This course studies the European societies in the Western Hemisphere after 1500 built by enslaved Africans and their descendants. The emancipation of these millions of slaves stands as one of humanity’s greatest accomplishments. This course introduces students to the ways slaver was eradicated and to the experiences of former slaves in the aftermath of emancipation as they and their former owners struggled to define the meaning of freedom.
