Catalog description

This course explores how civil rights and citizenship have shaped the foundational structures of American democracy. Drawing on historical and contemporary primary sources, we will interrogate the development of American civic identity, civil rights initiatives and the role of power and citizenship in expanding and limiting democratic participation. By the end of the course, students will be equipped with an understanding of U.S. government institutions and with the historical knowledge to engage as informed and critical participants in civic life.
