Catalog description

Prerequisites: Majors or minors in Music, Film and Media Arts, French, Spanish, Arabic/Middle Eastern, English, and History or International Film minor, preferably in third or fourth year. Otherwise, permission of instructor needed. In this course, students will explore 13 classics of French, Italian, German, or British cinema produced between 1930 and 2020 and made by the most prominent European film directors of the respective period. Through discussions, students will approach each film in terms of music, sound, narrative, cinematography, and editing. The emphasis of the analysis is, however, on sound and music.
