Legal Foundations of Special Education

Prerequisites: ESE 200 or ESE 400. This course provides an in-depth exploration of the laws, policies, and ethical considerations that shape the field of special education. Students will examine key federal legislation, including the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), with a focus on their implications for students, educators, and schools. Topics will include the rights of students with disabilities, the evaluation process, the individualized education program (IEP) process, due process procedures, and current legal challenges in the field.
