College Writing II - Technical Writing and Professional Communication

Prerequisite: Placement by ACT/SAT scores or English Placement Exam, or completion of ENG 100 or ENG 101. This section of College Writing II focuses on Technical Writing and Professional Communication and is designed to expand your professional voice as a writer and researcher across various technical and disciplinary contexts. At its heart, this course involves mastering ethical professional argument: a structured, evidence-based, and respectful presentation of a viewpoint designed to persuade an audience, solve problems, or make decisions. ENG 109 emphasizes the development of academic research and writing skills while urging students to engage with core questions such as: How do professionals communicate complex information to ensure safety, efficiency, and innovation? How is specialized data translated for non-technical audiences using text, illustration, and multimodal forms? What are the ethical and legal standards for documenting proprietary or public-facing information? Students will explore various genres including technical reports, research proposals, and multimodal texts tailored to diverse audiences. Through collaborative projects, peer reviews, and class discussions, students will learn to articulate their ideas effectively and support their arguments with credible sources. Students must pass ENG 100 or ENG 101 to enroll in any College Writing II course, including ENG 109. Students can only earn credit for College Writing II once.
