Catalog description
The course creates inquiry space for students to uncover and clarify their beliefs about teaching and education. Through reflective opportunities, the course draws on student memories of significant schooling experiences while introducing diverse ways individuals and communities experience education. Through articles, podcasts, film, and collaborative activities, the course examines the U.S. education system and all facets of teachers’ work. Course materials will develop understandings of intercultural contexts, habits of mind, and methods for addressing educational inequities and complex issues. To explore key beliefs about education and equity, students will develop an educational philosophy. Course activities include inquiring into the profession of teaching. The course will ground the analysis of education in settings that are rich with diversity of interests, abilities, assets, and narratives. Social factors impacting education will also be analyzed through lenses of critical theory and critical pedagogy. EDB 242 is a Professional Education TAG (Transfer Assurance Guide) course.
