Prerequisite: CMG 210. The health and safety aspects of environmental quality at a construction site are approached from regulatory aspects. The course covers OSHA Standards, policies, and procedures. External management elements can contribute to a degradation in occupational safety and health (OSH). Human and worksite elements are the more apparent causes of occupational accidents and illnesses. An effective OSH program mitigates hazards at construction sites. Course topics include scope and application of the OSHA Construction Standards, construction safety and health principles. During construction various hazards coupled with the unique nature of the industry contribute to high fatality rates. Special emphasis is placed on those areas of construction that are most hazardous. Upon completing the course students will have the ability to define construction related terms found in the OSHA Construction Standards, identify hazards peculiar to the construction industry, locate and determine appropriate OSHA Construction Standards, policies, and procedures, and describe the use of the OSHA Construction Standards and regulations to supplement an ongoing safety and health program.
