Catalog description

This hands-on laboratory course provides applied experience in foundational wildland firefighting principles, skills, and safety practices aligned with the National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) S-130 and S-190 standards. Students will gain practical proficiency in wildland fire behavior interpretation, fireline tools and equipment, firefighter safety, and basic suppression techniques through field-based exercises, simulations, and scenario-based training. Emphasis is placed on understanding fire environment factors, reading fuel types, implementing safe work practices, applying teamwork skills, and reinforcing situational awareness under varying conditions. Successful completion prepares students for entry-level fieldwork and supports readiness for further wildland fire qualifications.
