Social Work Practice - Foundation 2

Catalog description

This is the second foundation course using an integrated model of didactic learning grounded in practices that explicitly decenter White supremacy in social work. This course aims to prepare students for practicum and prevent them from potentially imposing paternalistic agendas that further marginalize and oppress vulnerable individuals and communities. Additionally, this class aims to promote holistic, culturally relevant practices that honor, respect, and utilize clients’ strengths in practice. This course has seven objectives: First, students will be introduced to anti-racist, anti-oppressive, and rights-based practices to empower and advance the greater good of individuals and communities. Second, students will become familiar with BIPOC scholars and other change agents whose contributions were pivotal in transforming the social welfare of different communities and advancing the social work profession. Third, students will learn about social work’s historical and current role in perpetuating systemic racism and how to combat it. Fourth, students will take active steps toward countering implicit and explicit bias. Fifth, students will be introduced to trauma-informed care and to specific actions they will take to prevent themselves from further traumatizing oppressed and marginalized communities. Sixth, students will explore how intersectionality impacts diverse client populations at different levels. Seven, students will learn how to utilize supervision and consultation to support their efforts in becoming competent social workers. Traditional Option Prerequisite: MSW-541
