Catalog description
This course examines sports films as cultural, philosophical, and narrative texts that communicate societal values, ethical dilemmas, and human experiences. Students analyze how sports cinema and documentaries represent race, gender, sexuality, class, identity, and community while exploring the historical, political, and cultural contexts that shape these narratives. Emphasis is placed on interpreting the thematic, symbolic, and literary elements of U.S. sports films to understand how civilization and cultural traditions express meaning, belief systems, and human values through storytelling and cinematic representation.
