Catalog description

This course examines the broad range of compositional techniques and historical developments relevant to the music of the twentieth century. The course will explore atonality, polytonality, neoclassicism, serialism, experimental music, minimalism, electronic music, and spectral music. Theoretical topics will include pitch-class set theory, 12-tone techniques, modes and scales, and quartal and quintal harmonies.
