Graduate Movement I: Dynamics of the Body/Freeing the Instrument
Case Western Reserve University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
This course explores hands on bodywork and movement designed to free the actor from habitual body patterns that inhibit flow of impulse, voice, breath, and emotion. In a process of increased awareness, disarmament, and release of tension, a freer instrument is unearthed and the actor has an opportunity to discover and become intimate with their own physicality. This allows them to express a greater capacity for presence and embody a wider range of experience and physical impulse. Engaging with the ground, ourselves, and each other on the level of bone, muscle, fascia, nervous system, carriage, release, imagination, and breath, we offer and receive simple nourishment geared towards embodiment and expansion. Experiential practices covered this semester include: Somatics: Experiential Anatomy and Body Dynamics, Dynamic Neutral Alignment, Developmental Movement Technique, Ashaya Yoga, and Creative Ensemble Practice. In a spirit of play we cultivate the ability to respond. Prereq: Must be a student in M.F.A. Acting program.
