Clinical Observer - Outpatient Nephrology Clinic

This course is a hybrid rotation between outpatient Nephrology Clinics and a UH-based Hemodialysis Clinic experience. The structure is 1/2 day Outpatient Clinic 3-4 times per week combined with rounding in the Hemodialysis Clinic 1/2 day, 3-4 days per week. This course is offered during the Summer, Fall, and Spring semesters on a schedule set by the Division of Nephrology at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. The objective of the course is to provide the students with the experience of observing care provided by an Attending in the two most common General Nephrology outpatient clinic settings. The student will learn the basic clinical skills, including nephrology history-taking, physical examination (observation with another examiner), diagnostic studies, and therapeutic options. Didactic sessions during clinic visits cover a wide range of topics (e.g., chronic kidney disease, electrolyte and acid/base disorders, bone metabolism, preparation for dialysis, and principles of hemodialysis) by multiple Nephrology attendings. The Clinical Observer will only observe procedures and will not actively participate in any health care - he/she/they will act strictly as an observer, but also as a physiological consultant to the Attending by providing basic science input to the clinical cases. The student will also be expected to attend 5 research conferences, as part of this elective.
