Medical Microbiology

Trillions of microbes are estimated to exist on the planet, yet only ~1,400 are known to cause human disease. In this course for post-baccalaureate PRIME ( PATH 314 ) and graduate ( PATH 414 ) students in School of Medicine programs, the study of microbiology is focused on pathogens of high clinical relevance. The core material covers the classification, replication cycle, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatments for bacterial, viral, fungal, and parasitic pathogens. Extensions of these topics include the host response to infection, the human microbiome, infectious proteins (prions), and antimicrobial resistance. Lectures are further infused with the clinical and research insight of faculty experts from the Center for Global Health and Disease, Center for AIDS Research (CFAR), University Hospitals Division of Infectious Disease & HIV Medicine, the Department of Pathology, and the CDC-funded National Prion Surveillance Center. Previous coursework in microbiology is not required. Offered as PATH 314 and PATH 414 . Prereq: Enrolled in the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Readiness Instruction for Biomedical Education (PRIME) program.
