Catalog description

This course provides training for graduate students interested in conducting at a professional level. The three main goals of this class are (1) to practice the gestures of conducting to refine the clarity of communication, (2) apply score study methods that will clarify and make the score coherent, and (3) connect the ways in which the gesture, score study, and rehearsal techniques interact to create a conductor's personality. Students will conduct the class ensemble, as well as in-university and outside ensembles. Video analysis, deep gestural study, and lively music making will enhance the graduate musical experience.
