Catalog description

This is a first introduction to algebraic geometry--the study of solutions of polynomial equations-- for advanced undergraduate students. Recent applications of this large and important area include number theory, combinatorics, theoretical physics, robotics, cryptology and coding theory. The contents of the course may vary from one semester to another, and may include, for example: the classical theory of algebraic curves in the setting of affine and projective varieties over fields; morphisms of varieties; resolution of singularities; Hilbert's Nullstellensatz; Bezout's theorem; and the Riemann-Roch theorem. Prereq: MATH 308 .
