Catalog description

This course examines disability-related laws, regulations, and enforcement guidance to understand the rights of individuals with disabilities at work, in places of public accommodation, in education, and in housing. Students will leave this course with an understanding of relevant laws, regulations, and agency guidance, as well as foundational cases that examine the rights of individuals with disabilities and how relevant laws impact access in all aspects of public life. While the course will focus on federal law, some sessions will focus on state and local differences to give students an opportunity to learn the dynamic nature of disability laws and how legal protections evolve. Laws addressed in this course include: - Americans with Disabilities Act (Titles I, II, and III) and ADA Amendments Act - Fair Housing Act - Family and Medical Leave Act - Individuals with Disabilities Education Act - California, Washington, Illinois, New York, and Ohio disability-related laws Students will analyze and apply relevant laws, regulations, and guidance through hypothetical situations discussed in class and in written assignments.
