Social History of Crime

Catalog description

This course explores the relationship between law and history in American society. It uses social history methodology to suggest new ways of understanding how the law works as a system of power to advance certain interests at the expense of less powerful groups, specifically with respect to the rise of mass incarceration and the application of the death penalty. This course examines the ways that moral reason intersects with issues of race and class in the unfolding of crime and punishment. Counts as a Human Diversity & Commonality course.
