Catalog description

This course aims to introduce students to the key ideas in designing, modeling, and controlling haptic (touch) interfaces that mediate interaction with virtual or remote environments. Students will get to study these concepts through both simulation- and hardware-based assignments. The broader vision of this course is that students will be able to use their understanding of the fundamentals to a) engineer simple haptic interfaces, b) critically evaluate the pros and cons of haptic interfaces for virtual and telerobotic applications, and c) progress to academic or professional research and development in the control, modeling, and design of haptic devices and teleoperator systems. The course assumes basic familiarity with signal processing theory and programming. Due to the limited class size, instructor consent is required. Offered as ECSE 383 and ECSE 483 . Prereq: ( ENGR 130 or ENGR 131 or ECSE 132 or CSDS 132 ) and ( PHYS 121 or PHYS 124 ). Coreq: ECSE 246 or EBME 308 or EMAE 351 .
