Industrial Strategy: Government Action to Transform the Economy

Catalog description

Industrial policies are policies that explicitly target the transformation of the structure of economic activity to improve public welfare, such as by increasing prosperity, promoting innovation, or fighting climate change. This course will provide students with a rigorous understanding of modern and historical industrial policies. Students will discuss classic and current literature on the subject, and under what conditions (if any) different kinds of industrial policies make sense. They will gain an understanding of the tools that policymakers have adopted, factors that shape their effectiveness, and their impacts on national and global trajectories of innovation, equality, and power. Students will be tasked with writing a research paper and evaluated through midterm and final assessments, as well as performing group work and various other assignments. Counts as a Communication Intensive course. Prereq: ECON 102 .
