Data Visualization for Social Science with AI-Augmented Coding and Analysis

Catalog description

Visualizations (such as graphs and maps) are powerful tools for understanding social science data and communicating findings about the social world. This course is a practical, hands-on introduction to creating and interpreting visual displays of data on topics such as economic outcomes, demographic change, public health, political behavior, and social attitudes. Students learn to direct AI coding agents to produce data analyses and visualizations using the R programming language, developing skills in data reasoning, prompt engineering, code evaluation, and visual communication. The course culminates in a group project analyzing a social science dataset and presenting findings as a scientific poster. No prior experience with data, coding, or AI tools is required. Counts as a CAS Quantitative Reasoning course. Prereq: Sophomore student standing.
