This course examines the development of warfare in the ancient Mediterranean, including the debated origins of war in prehistory, the rise of the great armies of Assyria and Egypt, the heyday of hoplite infantry in Greece, Alexander the Great's vast conquests, and the domination of the Mediterranean by the legions of the Roman Empire.
