Molecular Basis of Cancer

Catalog description

This course will examine the molecular basis of the initiation, progression, and treatment of cancer. We will accomplish this by examining the dysregulation of normal cellular processes involved in several common types of cancer from genotype to phenotype. We will also explore the techniques used to understand and detect cancer, the pharmacology of current therapies, FDA approved drugs and their targets, as well as a brief look at drug design. A second important aspect of this course is actively and critically engaging with the current scientific literature. Recent publications from high impact journals will be presented weekly to develop skills in interpretation and communication of the primary data and conclusions that build on and contribute to our current understanding of cancer. Offered as BIOC 350 and BIOC 450 . Prereq: Graduate student standing.
