Science and Race

Race is a topic which has long been of great interest to scientists. The first part of this course will examine how conceptualizations of race have changed over time within the biological sciences. We will examine how specific scientists have examined race, how their studies were influenced by societal beliefs, and how their scientific work in turn influenced the surrounding society. In the second part of the course we'll examine modern understandings about the existence of races in humans. We'll examine questions such as what exactly is race and is race a concept that applies to only humans. In the last section of the course we'll examine the biological and social impacts of individuals being assigned to different races. Counts as a Disciplinary Communication course.
