Catalog description

This course encompasses essential didactic and clinical instruction in theoretical principles of pathogenic parasites, bacteria, fungi and agents of bioterrorism. Emphasis is placed upon collection, handling and processing of patient specimens for the isolation, identification, antimicrobial susceptibility testing and medical significance of microorganisms involved in the infectious disease process in the healthcare and community environments. The clinical importance and relevance upon different patient populations, infections, diseases, treatment, and complications arising from various settings is assessed. Use of a bright field microscope and its importance in assessing specimen quality as well as departmental quality control and performance improvement principles and practices are a focus throughout the course to ensure the accuracy and reliability of laboratory information. To encourage and enhance critical thinking, pre-analytical, analytical, and post analytical skills are developed and evaluated throughout the course.
