Catalog description

This course has service, intellectual, and personal goals. The service goal is to provide effective tutors to High School students via the Schoolhouse.world peer tutoring platform. Students meet for class twice/week and tutor on the platform for a minimum of 25 hours. To promote effectiveness, the course covers topics of tutoring ~how digital tutoring platforms engage students, focusing on meta-learning strategies and reflecting and iterating on tutoring sessions; teaching ~exploring the connection between teaching and learning, laws and other factors that impact educators; and leading ~gaining a broader understanding of the issues that students face, exploring how access to resources affect the disparities between opportunities and performance for urban, suburban and rural school students, and what our responsibility as citizens is to impact this ecosystem. Another focus of the class is a review of the US education system to look at the factors that lead to a "supplemental educational services" industry in the United States of more than $27 billion- what are the policies and traditions that keep students from learning while in school, and why do we need so many 'extra' programs and activities? The class will explore what happens when families are not able to afford the external services, how online learning platforms change the landscape of supplemental education for those populations, and how research at CMU has a direct impact on this work.
